North Dakota Autism Spectrum Disorder Waiver Program

The ND Autism Spectrum Disorder Waiver is a Medicaid waiver program designed to help families care for a child diagnosed with autism at home. This is a "parent-driven" program, meaning parents determine what their family needs to keep their child at home.

Services Provided

  • Assistive Technology - devices or equipment to help the child navigate daily challenges
  • Community Connector - opportunities to build relationships and supports in the community
  • Remote Monitoring - safety devices to assist in finding a child with wandering behaviors and provide quicker assistance
  • Respite Care - temporary relief for parents from the stress of caring for a child with special needs
  • Service Management - assistance in gaining access to waiver and other Medicaid state plan services, as well as medical, social, and educational services

Eligibility Criteria

  • Child is between birth through age 17 (qualifies until 18th birthday)
  • Child is eligible to receive care in an intermediate care facility
  • Child has a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder
  • Child is living in their parents' or other legally-responsible caregiver's home

Important Requirements

  • All children on the waiver must have a completed Participant Service Plan every six months at minimum
  • Two home visits must occur every year by the service manager
  • All services being requested must be part of the Participant Service Plan
  • After approval, the family will need to apply for Medicaid for the approved child
